Rain Garden & Sustainable Gardening Workshops

Saturday, March 13th, 2010 at 12:31am. 43 Views, 0 Comments.

Early spring is the time to spruce up a home's exterior for the late spring and early summer home selling season. As I write this, the snow is melting away more quickly than expected. That mean's it is almost landscaping and gardening season. Just in time, there are some workshops to get you prepared for the planting season.

With all the rain we've been getting, naturally rain gardens would be a good topic to discuss. Do you have a low lying area in your yard where rain water flows or accumulates? It can be hard to keep plants alive in those areas. Planting a rain garden in that spot can help improve the quality of local lakes, rivers and streams. Metro Blooms is offering a series of low-cost rain garden workshops to help get you started.

For $10, learn how…

City of Saint Paul is Going Green

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 at 6:18pm. 78 Views, 0 Comments.

With eyes set to the future, the city of St. Paul is moving forward with green building requirements for new construction projects that receive $200,000 or more in city funding.

An advisory group of architects, designers, contractors, developers, bankers, regulatory agencies, city staff and other industry representatives worked for more than two years to develop the city's new sustainable building policy. Under it, building projects that receive at least $200,000 in city loans, grants or "other funding vehicles" must meet green building standards as defined by one of seven rating systems to satisfy the requirements. A partial list of approved rating systems includes LEED Silver or Green Globes 2 for commercial projects or LEED for Homes or Minnesota…

RiverCentre Gets Green in Saint Paul

Friday, October 30th, 2009 at 4:02pm. 109 Views, 0 Comments.

Two stories about the RiverCentre in St. Paul:

First, a $2 million, 1-megawatt solar energy system will be installed on the roof of the St. Paul RiverCentre. It will be the largest solar-energy installation in the state.

District Energy St. Paul, which provides heating and cooling for downtown's commercial and residential buildings, will provide funds for its construction of $1 million, in addition to a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The system will heat water for downtown and offset energy that District Energy St. Paul expends burning waste wood for its heating system. It should be running by the end of 2010.

Second, officials are working on cutting the amount of trash generated at Saint Paul's RiverCentre. Visitors to the RiverCentre…

Saint Paul on the Forefront of Green Practices

Friday, October 31st, 2008 at 4:36pm. 121 Views, 0 Comments.

The City of Saint Paul has been working hard to ensure that it stands out as a community that not only cares for the environment, but sees the money saving value green technology potentially offers.  I went back through my previous posts to find all of the ones I wrote about how St. Paul has been evolving towards a more earth-friendly community.  I even surprised myself with how many I found!

Working backwards, there was the article I wrote about a Macalester College student who was recently recognized as an environmental leader; a great story about youths in Dayton’s Bluff being honored for their anti-littering work; and a recycling collection program at the Como Park Zoo.  Additionally, the City of St. Paul works hard to preserve its urban canopy…

More Green Minds in Saint Paul

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 at 8:01pm. 106 Views, 0 Comments.

Yesterday, I wrote a blog post about some youths working to make a difference in the environment of Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood of Saint Paul.  I ran across an article today about yet another young person working to make the world a cleaner place to live, within St. Paul and beyond.  This time, he hails from the Macalester neighborhood of Saint Paul.

A student from Macalester College was honored in San Francisco this week with a Brower Youth Award.  The award recognizes six North American environmental leaders between the ages of 13 and 22.  21-year-old Timothy DenHerder-Thomas will receive a $3,000 award and participate in skills-building and mentoring workshops.

DenHerder-Thomas believes that becoming more earth-friendly as a society doesn’t need to…

It Starts at Como Park Zoo…

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 at 9:23pm. 110 Views, 0 Comments.

And it could spread all over the City!

Como Park Zoo's newest addition isn’t an exotic import or a new baby fuzzy creature.  Nope, the latest additions to the zoo are recycling containers.  The receptacles are for plastic bottles, aluminum cans, milk cartons, juice boxes, and more.

The Como Park Zoo is the initial test location of a pilot program that aims to put recycling containers in parks and public areas across the City of St. Paul. The city and Eureka Recycling have teamed up to create this pilot project.  If the recycling bins work out for a reasonable cost, Saint Paul could be a model for other cities.

The idea to put recycling bins in public areas arose during a community the St. Paul Environmental Roundtable in 2005. More and more people…
