Saint Paul Neighborhoods

Known as St. Paul's Garden District, Como Park is primarily a residential and recreational neighborhood. The neighborhood is centered around Como Lake and its large parks. Como Park is in the northwest area of St. Paul real estate. It is bordered on the north by Hoyt Avenue, Larpenteur Avenue and the city of Roseville. The southern border of Como is the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks and Maryland Avenue. Snelling Avenue is to the west and Dale Street to the east.

Como Park was settled as farmland in the mid 1800's. Como Lake was named in 1848 and was incorporated into the city of St. Paul in 1854. Real estate developer Henry McKenty believed Lake Como real estate would make a great resort area and began construction on Como Road in 1868. McKenty's vision never developed, but today Como Road is part of Como Avenue, a major street running through the neighborhood.

The 256 acres on the west side of Lake Como was purchased by the city of St. Paul in 1873 for its picturesque location. The electric street car made its way to Lake Como in 1893 and allowed St. Paul residents to make the 3-mile trip to Como Lake Park in 30 minutes. In 1897, the Como Zoo was built. The Como Lakeside Pavilion was constructed from 1905 to 1906. Then in 1915, the Como Park Conservatory was created. These large structures are still the recreational center of the neighborhood. Como Park is the most widely used park in the Twin Cities area. The zoo is free to visitors. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, formerly the Como Park Conservatory, is the largest indoor, glass garden in the area. The Como Lakeside Pavilion provides live entertainment several times a week throughout the summer. The Pavilion houses Black Bear Crossings, a café featuring sandwiches, deserts and coffee. The park also includes miles of biking, walking and running trails.

Como Park MN Homes, Townhomes, & Condos MLS

Original residential settlement in Como Park started around 1850. One original farmhouse from that era still stands. Homes are not built on the lake, but many homes have lake views. There are several 19th-century Victorian homes along the southern shore. Como Park real estate did not become widely popular until after World War II. One-third of the homes in the district are less than 40 years old. Craftsman bungalows and ramblers are popular throughout the neighborhood. There are still pockets of the neighborhood where new construction homes are being built.

The neighborhood offers both public and parochial schools. Chelsea Heights and Como Elementary are neighborhood elementary schools. Como Junior and Senior High are also part of the Como Park area.

The Minnesota State Fair Grounds border Como Park on the west. The State Fair takes place each year in August. The State Fair grounds are also used throughout the year for car shows, horse shows, antique sales, and technology fairs.
