Dayton's Bluff MN Homes & Condos
Real estate in Dayton's Bluff MN offers a prime location. Located on the east side of St. Paul, Dayton's Bluff overlooks downtown St. Paul and Interstate 94. The northern border of the neighborhood is Grove Street and the Burlington Northern Railroad. The southern border is Warner Road. To the west is Lafayette Road and Highway 3, and to the east is Highway 61. Dayton's Bluff MN real estate in certainly worth investigating.
Many wealthy St. Paul residents built their upscale homes in the area. These wealthy Minnesotans included Lyman Dayton, who purchased nearly 5,000 acres in the neighborhood. Dayton built his home here and is the namesake for the district. Many of these homes, but not all, have been refurbished.
After the Civil War, the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood became less fashionable and more affordable for the working class. Several skilled German immigrants settled in the Northwest portion of the neighborhood. The Northwest area is where the largest concentration of 19th century buildings can be found, featuring Italianate and Queen Anne styles of architecture.
This neighborhood also has historical significance because of the Indian Mounds Park. Over 1,000 years ago, the Hopewell Native Americans used the Dayton's Bluff area as a sacred burial ground. Today, six burial mounds remain in the park, which features walking paths, playgrounds and a picnic area.
Industries that made the neighborhood prosperous were found in the northern and western sections of Dayton's Bluff. One of these buildings still stands today - the Hamm's Brewery. The Brewery was one of the largest breweries in the Northwest in the 1880's. Some of the homes surrounding the Hamm's Brewery were built by the prosperous Hamm family. The Hamm's Brewery changed ownership many times over the last hundred years and beer production at the site ended in 1997.
The Dayton's Bluff Community Council and The East Side Neighborhood Development Company are active in the area's revitalization. The Dayton's Bluff Neighborhood Housing Service assists buyers financially with purchasing a home in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood.
