Payne-Phalen MN Homes & Condos
Today there are great options for homes & condos in Payne-Phalen MN, but the neighborhood is built on an interesting history. The first settlers to Payne-Phalen built shanties and log cabins in the 1840's and 50's along Phalen Creek and Trout Brook. This area was called Swede Hollow. Waves of Swedish, then Irish, Italian, Polish and finally Mexican immigrants found temporary housing in the area. The area to the west of Swede Hollow, called Railroad Island, contains many of the oldest homes in the district. Before the Civil War, Payne-Phalen was a neighborhood where many wealthy St. Paul residents made their homes. As immigrants found employment, they began building permanent homes in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood.
Most of the architecture in the area is simpler and smaller than what might be found in other neighborhoods. There are a few Victorians, Colonials and bungalows near Lake Phalen.
The Payne-Phalen neighborhood offers both neighborhood elementary schools and public magnet schools. Phalen Lake Elementary is the neighborhood school. St. Paul residents have the choice to send their children to magnet programs like Farnsworth Aerospace Magnet School.
The neighborhood has excellent recreational facilities. There is a three mile bike and running trail surrounding Lake Phalen. The park near the lake offers a golf course, swimming beaches and cross-country ski trails.
