Summit-University St Paul MN Information
Summit-University also possesses historic non-residential architecture. The Temple of Aaron was built in 1916 and features Beaux style architecture and St. Luke's Catholic Church from 1924 features Romanesque Revival.
The area saw the greatest development in the 1880's and 1890's, transforming it from a farming community to a residential community. Street car lines began to run throughout the neighborhood and made commuting easy for the middle class. Famous Minnesotans James J. Hill and Archbishop John Ireland were instrumental in getting laborers to settle in the Summit-University neighborhood.
Due to working-class settlement Summit-University also has a variety of rowhouses and brick apartment buildings. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in one of these Summit University rowhouses while he wrote This Side of Paradise. Many of these original rentals have been converted into large, trendy condominiums.
Summit-University saw revitalization in the 1990's. A number of homes and businesses have been refurbished. Selby Avenue has become a destination for shoppers and diners.
Selby Avenue and Dale Street form the major crossroads in the district. The area is pedestrian friendly with a variety of high-end and casual restaurants. Restaurants along Selby Avenue are known for excellent outdoor dining. Casual dining and cocktails can be found at the Muddy Pig, Happy Gnome, Fabulous Ferns or Costello's. A fine dining experience is offered at Moscow on the Hill, The Vintage, La Grolla or W.A. Frosts.

Summit-University was originally settled as a farming community in 1850, and one of the original farm houses still stands. Some of the original architecture along University Avenue has suffered demolition with urban development. Many of the original homes still stand east of Dale Street in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood. Federal, Italianate, Queen Anne, Shingle and Colonial Revival style homes can all be found in the neighborhood. In 2009, the median sales price of a single family homes, townhouses, or condos in the Summit - University neighborhoods of Saint Paul was $206,250.
