St. Paul's West Side is a neighborhood just south of downtown, directly across the Mississippi River and over the Smith Avenue High Bridge. The name West Side is somewhat confusing because the neighborhood is located in the south and eastern portion of St. Paul, but the name comes from the fact that West St. Paul is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River. The West Side is bordered on the north, west and east by the scenic Mississippi River and on the south by Annapolis Street.
The West Side neighborhood has unbelievable views of downtown St Paul. The major commercial streets through the West Side are Caesar Chavez Street (formerly Concord Street) and Robert Street.

The neighborhood has a rich history. From 1851-1874, the West Side was part of Dakota County and home to the Dakota Native American Tribe. Later, the area became part of St. Paul and Ramsey County, and French-Canadian, Irish and German immigrants began to settle along the west bank. Two breweries opened on the West Side in the 1870's. The breweries used St. Paul's famous cave system to cool and store their beer. The breweries and many of the original industries in the area were demolished in the 1960s with urban renewal projects.
More than half of the residential property on the West Side was built before 1940. The majority of the homes in the area are Midwestern-squares and bungalows. Near Cherokee Park and Smith Avenue there are larger Colonial and Tudor homes.
The West Side has a lot to offer in terms of recreation. There are several excellent ethnic restaurants in the area. Boca Chica and El Burrito Mercado offer some of the best Mexican food in the Twin Cities. People also travel from all over the Twin Cities for the West Side's Cinco de Mayo celebration. The Parque Castillo offers family nights weekly in the summer. The River View Branch Library is on the National Register of Historic Places. Cherokee Park, located near the river, is a place for solitude that offers a chance to watch river barges and wildlife.
The neighborhood has three St. Paul public elementary schools: Cherokee Heights Elementary, River View West Side and Roosevelt Elementary. Humboldt Junior and Senior High are both located in the West Side neighborhood.
